Off Season Bow Care

The off season is a great time to have your pro shop check over your bow for any damage that may have occurred throughout the hunting season. Extreme temperature differences along with mud, snow and rain can be a little tough on equipment, and those walks through the brush and thickets can damage the bow string. Changing the string and cables is a very important factor on your bow’s performance, and if you are the archer who shoots frequently year round, you may consider changing your string yearly.

When choosing a new string for your bow, spend the extra money on a high performance string such as Vapor Trail. High performance strings allow you to tune your bow without having to worry about the string stretching throughout its break-in period. Make sure you broad head tune your bow after changing strings, and shoot your broad heads throughout the offseason. When the season opens months later, you’ll have all the confidence you need that your broad heads are flying dead on.

Keeping that new string waxed will prolong its life considerably, so make sure you wax it at least once a week if you shoot frequently. There are some great new wax products on the market from Scorpion Venom, which makes a polymeric liquid wax that’s easy to use and penetrates your string completely. A little odorless oil is a great way to keep any of your screws and bolts from rusting and make sure to add a little to the cam bushings.
